What social media sites do you use to listen to music and discover new music?

What social music sites do you use in a typical month? Pandora, Soundcloud, The Hype Machine, iLike, Last.FM? There are hundreds of others out there, but which do you use?

2010 was a great year for new music, especially for fans of electonica, indie, and hip-hop and anybody who gets excited when they hear the word "dubstep". That's right, dubstep. If you still think that dubstep is the name of that new band you have been hearing all over the place, do me a favor and inform yourself here. Some people saw it coming, but 2010 was the breakout year for the new genre that many refer to as Dubstep.  2010 also brought some fresh new sounds into the indie and hip-hop scenes as well. Find the list of my favorite tracks from these genres below, sit back, relax and let your ears, body, and soul reminisce to the great music that was created in 2010. For a list of Artists to Look Out For in 2011, see my article here: Artists to Look Out for in 2011
Alternative/Indie:
Matt & Kim - Cameras

Matt & Kim are an indie rock duo based in New York. They are pretty popular with the indie scene. In 2009, they got a lot of publicity and airtime with their single "Daylight", which has been used in commercials, TV shows, and video game soundtracks. 2010 brought the new killer track "Cameras" - the first single to from their 3rd full length album Sidewalks. This song has a simple and happy melody with a catchy beat. Listen to it above.
Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons - Paper Planes (Live at Shrine on April 18, 2010)

Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons do a stellar cover of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes". I originally heard a live recording of this track on SIRIUS/XM's Jam On station. After hearing it twice on the radio, I had to download a copy for myself (above). I found one on Archive.org, and started listening to it daily during late spring/early summer of 2010. Most of you have heard the original version of this song, but Jerry Joseph makes it his own by slowing it down and changing up the beat. Joseph's voice is raw, powerful, and almost scratchy, giving the originally dark lyrics more substance than any other remake of this track that I have heard. This track was such a success for Jerry Joseph over this past year, that he even recorded a studio version with Wally Ingram that can be found on his late 2010 release Civility. Watch the video for the album version below.

Keller & The Keels - Teen Angst

One of Keller Williams' sideprojects, Keller & The Keels, released their second album Thief in 2010, a follow up album to their debut Grass, which was released in 2006. Keller & The Keels consists of Keller Williams and husband and wife duo Larry and Jenny Keel. Whereas Grass features covers as well as original tracks, Thief consists entirely of cover songs - done with a unique bluegrass twist. My favorite song on their new album is a cover of Cracker's 1992 single "Teen Angst".

Surjan Stevens - Vesuvius

I don't have too much to say about this song, except that I like it.  It is slow, kind of dark, and it is powerful. Give it a listen above.

DJ Fresh - Gold Dust (Flux Pavilion Remix)

This track was definitely one of my favorite filthy, dirty dubstep remixes of 2010. Flux Pavilion comes hard with this track. Check it out.

DJ Fresh - Gold Dust (Flux Pavillion Remix)

      Dirty, catchy, beautiful.

      Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness

This is what happens when you take a dirty song and make it filthy!

      Dayn - Party Starta
This is some hard, in-your-face dubstep. This tune lives up to its title of "Party Starta", and will make you move in sporadic ways that may not resemble dancing in any form to people unfamiliar to the word dubstep. Seriously, if this track fails to get you pumped up and ready to go, check your pulse. To quote a lyric from this song sais it all: "Roll into the rave like you threw a grenade!!" *insert the most disgusted face you can make here - see video for example*

Artists to Look Out for in 2011

Fithly, Grimey, Dirty, Sick, Nasty, OhMyGod!, Banger, fucking gnar?

Artists to Look Out For in 2011

      Hip-hop
Asher Roth - Some people may be doubting me on this one because of his simplistic, unoriginal hit single "", but don't hate a man for one song. An artist has to get on the radar somehow, and apparently a lot of people liked that song - or else I wouldn't have called it a 'hit' single. I liked the song at least, even though it wasn't the most creative track.

...because the majority of Americans are inherently dumb (except the one's that read this blog, of course).
      Kid Cudi -
Sam Adams - In the words of Same Adams in reference to his music: "I call it Hip-hop Dubstep". Need I say more?

      I didn't think so.

But I will because it is some hot stuff. If not by himself, the man created a genre out of the two most innovative music genre's in the past 30 years. Have you heard another rapper to write songs using dubstep beats? I'm not talking about DJ's and producers mixing dubstep beats and hip-hop lyrics but a rapper, or as I prefer the say: "wordsmith", who either produces his own dubstep beats or even uses other artists' grimey drum and bass beats to create music that is heavily influenced by this filthy new genre that has been blowing up on the underground music scene all over the world. If you love this dubstep thing as much as I do (or even a little bit for that matter), or even if you're just a hip-hop fan, check out the tracks Bass Head and Some Chords, where he flows to popular beats produced by Bassnectar and Deadmau5, two of the most influencial dubstep/electronic producers of their time. Both tracks can be found on the Party records Mixtape (No DJ) and downloaded for free here. (**look up how to properly format an album name and song/track name**)

If you know of other hip hop artists or wordsmiths, if you will, that integrate electronica styles into their music, let us know in the comments below. I would love to hear it, so include some links if you can!

      Na Palm
Liked that didn't ya? Speaking of some Hip-hop Dubstep, the next artist on the list is Na Palm. If you liked that Hip-hop Dubstep, check out the Justice Remix of Na Palm's Genesis here:

In terms of transcending genres, dubstep does not stop with hip-hop; however, even Britney Spears dropped some wobble-bass in her new single Hold It Against Me.  Some fans of the genre may always refuse to refer to Britney's new single (or anything else she touches, for that matter) as "dubstep", but you can't deny the presence of that crunchy, wobble-bass that many of us have grown to love.  Britney Spears, I am still not a fan, but well done in using the whomp-whomp to lighten up some crappy music.

      Wale

He made it to my "Best Tracks of 2010" list with his single "Chillin'" ft. Lady Gaga.  Yes, Lady Gaga - if you are hating already because he dropped a single with a very successful pop artists that I don't generally care for in order to put his name on the map, see the comment about Asher Roth, above.  Check out the album More About Nothing If you like fresh hip-hop , are a Seinfeld fan, or better yet, both.

And last but not least: any artist that implements the wobble bass, the whomp whomp, the dubstep, the d'n'b,  or whatever you want to call it into their music!  Yea, I know.  I'm a bass-head at heart.

      Mochi Beats

      DUB-MOTHERF'ING-STEP
      OTHER ELECTRONICA

      Mansions on the Moon
      Jakwob
      The Polish Ambassador

      INDIE
      Florence + The Machine
      Mumford and Sons
